I don’t know everything, and that’s okay. As long as I can take the time to do a bit of research, I can learn about new things. Whenever I come across a word I don’t know, like “chicane” for example, I can look it up. I can use GoldenDict, a very useful dictionary lookup program, to find out what the word “chicane” means.

GoldenDict is available for Microsoft’s Windows operating system. The dictionary lookup program is available as an installer for 32-bit Windows editions and as a portable version, also for 32-bit Windows editions.
GoldenDict is also available for Google’s Android mobile operating system.
The GoldenDict source code is available for Linux users and for anyone who is interested in getting it.

GoldenDict has a tabbed interface that is divided in two. The panel on the left presents your search query and a list of results related to your search query. Pick an entry from the aforementioned list and the panel on the right hand side will be populated with info. Above these two panels there’s a File Menu and a toolbar with buttons for various functions: back/forward, print, save article, scan popup, and more.

A “Welcome to GoldenDict!” tab is presented by default on the application’s interface. It tells you that to start working with GoldenDict you need to add some directory paths, set up Wikipedia sites and other sources, select the dictionary order, and create dictionary groups.

Here’s a cool function that GoldenDict has to offer: look up words from other active applications. You can look up words while using other applications.

GoldenDict provides support for dictionary file formats, provides support for Wikipedia, Wiktionary, or any other MediaWiki-based site, and provides support for hotkeys.

Released under a GNU General Public License (GPL), GoldenDict is free software.

GoldenDict nicely combines three key elements: free, easy to use, useful functionality. It is a very useful dictionary lookup program.

Pros

GoldenDict is available as an installer and as a portable version; GoldenDict is available for Android; the source code is available for Linux. GoldenDict has a tabbed interface that is quite easy to use. GoldenDict provides support for dictionary file formats, provides support for Wikipedia, Wiktionary, or any other MediaWiki-based site, and provides support for hotkeys. GoldenDict is free software.

Cons

None that I could think of.
